I had a fantastic night at North Italia-Henderson, a new location that is as authentic as it gets! This lovely new location is part of a California chain of 42 restaurants in The District, next to Green Valley Ranch Casino. I did not know about a location in Summerlin.
North Italia-Henderson occupies about 10,000 square feet in a brand-new building. There is plenty of eye contact in the kitchen and free parking. The place is gorgeous in North Italian tradition and style. There is plenty of seating, both high tops and booths. The ambiance and mouthwatering smells demanded we sample an array of items.
This was a busy premiere opening night, and the staff were genuinely happy to tell us about all their items. We started with a dirty martini and quickly moved on to their delicious Calamari Fritti with house-made giardiniera and a couple of salads, each big enough for three to four people. I tried the Italian Farm, and my guest had Tuscan Kale. We then moved on to a mesmerizing dish of Scallops and risotto, which I could have ordered five plates, and pasta to die for! For dessert, we indulged in a colossal Sundae with nuts, strawberries, bananas, and fudge sauce; the same delectable concoction I had eaten at their location in Del Mar, California, years ago.

I began to pay attention to Horton Foote’s work about forty years ago. I was in the military and the movie Tender Mercies was playing at a naval base theater. The plot concerns a washed-up country singer named Mac Sledge (Robert Duvall) whose life begins anew after he meets and marries a devoutly religious widow named Rosa Lee (Tess Harper) who runs a motel on a lonely Texas highway. What initially drew me into the theater was Duvall, an actor I admired, but it was the movie as a whole that affected me. It has a beautiful quietness about it but also elements of foreboding—in that one is uncertain if Mac will be able to hold fast to the new life he has been given.
Thankfully Tender Mercies received the recognition it deserved. The writer, Horton Foote, won the Academy Award that year for best original screenplay (and Duvall won for best actor).
But Foote had been around for a long time already. He wrote the screenplay to the 1962 classic To Kill a Mockingbird, adapting the material from Harper Lee’s novel. Other adaptations were drawn from the works of Faulkner, Steinbeck, and Flannery O’Connor. One of the Faulkner adaptations is a rather rough-hewn film called Tomorrow (1972) in which Duvall plays a backwoodsman caring for a pregnant woman whose family has rejected her. I think of this movie as a kind of hillbilly variant of Kramer vs. Kramer, at least as regards the trauma that is often involved in custody battles. As far as I’m concerned, Tomorrow is the more powerful film.
Foote wrote a novel and play in the 1950s called The Chase that was made into a movie in 1966 (starring, among other notables, Marlon Brando). The screenplay was written by Lillian Hellman who, apparently having other fish to fry, altered the original material considerably.According to Leonard Maltin’s Movie & Video Guide, there were serious behind-the-scenes conflicts between Hellman and others. I don’t know but I suspect that Foote himself was not happy with the end result. In any case, while the movie has a certain power, the play is simpler and better. There is also an element of hope that is lacking in the film.
I return now to Tender Mercies because it too ends on a hopeful note. In this case, it is a religiously hopeful note. Mac, in the throes of grief over the death of his daughter (from a previous marriage), says to Rosa Lee: “See, I don’t trust happiness. I never did, I never will.”These bitter words seem to express a longstanding distrust in God. And yet, at the film’s climax, we hear him singing a hymn that he used to sing to his daughter when she was a baby. The significance of this easy-to-overlook detail is that he is singing, belatedly but not in vain, to his daughter. He can do so because, in the God whom Mac has come to believe in, his daughter is not dead.

Everyone has heard of the Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx (and Friedrich Engels) even if they have not read it. For those who have not read it, the gist of this 1848 pamphlet is that everything is so irreparably and hopelessly bad that it deserves to be destroyed. In Marx’s own words: “[The Communists] openly declare that their ends can be attained only by the forcible overthrow of all existing social conditions.” The results of this demand for radical change include Lenin’s and Stalin’s Russia, Mao’s China, Pol Pot’s Cambodia, and present day North Korea.
It is not surprising that many people rejected, if only belatedly, this Marxist call to destroy/transform the world. John V. Fleming takes a close look at four such individuals—and the four books, or “manifestos,” they wrote. But Fleming also details the dramatic histories surrounding the four books. They are: Darkness at Noon by Arthur Koestler; Out of the Night by Richard Krebs (published under the pen name Jan Valtin); I Chose Freedom by Victor Kravchenko; and Witness by Whitaker Chambers.
All four books are well worth reading. But I am especially partial to the two that once enjoyed bestseller status before sinking—along with their authors—into oblivion.
Out of the Night was written by a tough German sailor who seems to have been almost maniacally driven. It presents a powerful picture of a working class communist who frequently places himself in the thick of danger. Though less literary, it makes me think of Tropic of Cancer or Journey to the End of the Night, especially the latter. But Out of the Night is also Augustinian in that it portrays the narrator’s gradual liberation from a false religion.
But my favorite of the four is Kravchenko’s I Chose Freedom. With the exception of Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag epic, I don’t know of another book that captures more vividly the evil of the Stalin regime. Moreover, the author’s courtroom battle against various smears directed at him and his book was impressive, even heroic. He was thoroughly vindicated but the triumph was short lived. In the end Victor Kravchenko fell into despair and took his own life.
Fleming’s book itself, which was published in 2009, is an admirable work. He handles the subject matter with keen wit, intelligence, and moral common sense. Few histories provide a more fascinating description of the main antagonisms of the Cold War.
However, there is at least one component of Fleming’s book that I don’t like. In his introduction, he describes Communism as “a mere ghost,” as if it died completely when the Cold War ended. But Communism is not dead; it remains a force to contend with up to the present day. I refer not only to China, North Korea and other Communist states, but to movements like wokeism and cancel culture right here in the United States. These latter manifestations of Marxism seem to be weakening, but for a time the momentum was in their favor; and it is doubtful that they will ever disappear altogether.
