Rare Society- No One Can Beat This New Steak House

An absolutely incredible new steak house, Rare Society, has opened in Las Vegas at the Uncommons, right across from Durango Casino.

The experience on Friday night with my great friends Bob and Lally Barnes and Doctor Allen, my guest, was so much more than we could have imagined. We loved the fabulous menu that was pre-picked for us! Our first course was a Seafood Royale, with oysters, shrimp, king crab, Ahi tartare, and salmon poke for four. The parker house rolls they are famous for were piping hot, and our Caesar Salad was so fresh it had the crunch we all crave. Not to be outdone, the Grilled baby lamb chops were no less than amazing. Jared Perkins, the assistant general manager came over to introduce himself and there was much to compliment! 

Rare Society has opened here as it’s 6th location—San Diego and Solano Beach are two others. There was plenty of staff throughout to wholeheartedly serve their customers. Right on a corner of the Uncommons, this is going to be the grandest restaurant in the whole southside.

Next, we enjoyed the Hamachi crudo, which stood out with the yuzu glaze but also had texture.

For a party of four we thought “the associate” board would be plenty. This is a very unique concept! We got to try the filet, Denver cut, and a tri-tip, paired with their three steak sauces and a delicious butter topping. Every bite of meat was better than the last—Unbelievable—and more decadent than the last! But I have to say my favorite was the filet. Each one was prepared to perfection, along with side dishes of potato au gratin, grilled broccolini, and lobster and crab macaroni. Marvelous!

Having saved some room for dessert, the bananas foster cheesecake was a no-brainer. NO WORDS for this dessert, along with the buttercake and an outstanding sour cream ice cream. I have never had had ice cream like that. I can’t proclaim this 5 stars enough, it deserves a 10!

 

Service was great, drinks were made to perfection. I tried something totally new for me, an aged bourbon accompanied with grilled pork fat—fantastic!

Closed on Monday and Tuesday, open rest of the week from 5 p.m. on. Once again, they deserve a 10-star rating.

When the world learned Ozzy Osbourne had passed, it wasn’t a headline that stopped me…it was a feeling. My eldest daughter was the one who broke the news. She didn’t just send a text…she delivered it like a sacred message, knowing full well what Ozzy meant to me. I have one of his album covers tattooed on me! Not because he was a celebrity, but because in some strange and soul-etching way, he had been a lifelong companion, a misunderstood prophet hiding behind guitar distortion and eyeliner.

Ozzy Osbourne was never merely a rockstar. He was a man who carried both light and shadow, often simultaneously. To many, he was the “Prince of Darkness”…a theatrical persona cloaked in controversy, the poster child for every parental warning label. But to those who listened closely… truly listened… he was something else entirely. Within the riffs and howls lived a lament, a cry for truth, for redemption, for understanding. Ozzy didn’t glorify darkness…he illuminated it…he humiliated it… he mocked it…he exposed it. Not through moral posturing, but through honesty so raw it hurt. They truly were “War Pigs” right “Jimmy Sinner”, Mr…“Miracle Man”?

I remember being a teenager in Quebec, with nothing but a secondhand Walkman, a spiral notebook, and a French-English dictionary. I would press rewind over and over, deciphering every lyric. Literally. I wasn’t just learning English…I was learning how to feel. His lyrics taught me what pain sounded like in another language, what confession looked like without shame, and what survival sounded like when you didn’t know if you’d make it. He didn’t sing “to” us. He sang “with” us. And in that fellowship, there was light.

Years later, in 2001, I had begun publishing, and my quiet dream had solidified: one day, I wanted to interview Ozzy. Not for fame. Not for career gain. But because I wanted to sit across from the man who had unknowingly mentored me in courage and emotional transparency. I even mailed him a handwritten letter…complete with creative stage designs for a post-apocalyptic concert. I doubt it ever made it to him, but that wasn’t the point. That letter was an offering, a thank-you note written in the language he taught me to speak.

He wasn’t perfect. He was scarred, contradictory, occasionally incoherent…but always real. And that’s precisely why he resonated so deeply with so many. Unlike the self-righteous who condemned him from pulpits or behind parental advisory stickers, Ozzy didn’t hide behind a mask of virtue. He showed us his demons and dared us to face our own.

Let’s take a scalpel to the narrative that painted him as the villain. The anecdotes they don’t tell you from the altar or in think-pieces reveal a man of profound humility and generosity.

After one snowy UK show, fans began throwing snowballs at him post-performance. Instead of anger or offense, Ozzy joined in the chaos…laughing, ducking, hurling snowballs back…and then, out of breath, he thanked the crowd for giving him one of the best memories of his life¹.

At his final concert, titled “Back to the Beginning,” Ozzy helped raise nearly $190 million for charity…benefitting Cure Parkinson’s, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, and Acorn Children’s Hospice². He and Sharon, his dedicated and loyal wife, could have made that night about legacy or ego. Instead, he chose compassion.

Despite decades of being labeled a satanist, Ozzy was a practicing member of the Church of England³. He prayed before every show. He spoke of good and evil with more theological nuance than most televangelists. But he didn’t parade his faith…he lived it quietly, as if aware that sacredness is often defiled by spotlight.

Just days before his passing, a video emerged of Ozzy having breakfast with his daughter Kelly and his grandson Sidney. No paparazzi. No dramatic lighting. Just a grandfather, laughing over toast and coffee⁴. The so-called Prince of Darkness was, in the end, a gentle soul in a family kitchen.

Years earlier, a Seattle teen wrote a public letter defending Ozzy’s legacy. Without fanfare, his camp sent back a handwritten thank-you note…one human acknowledging another⁵. No press release. No Twitter post. Just respect.

And let’s not forget “The Osbournes”. Ozzy didn’t just open his home to cameras…he opened his soul. Millions saw the addiction, the dysfunction, the rawness. And rather than shrinking back, he let it play out in hopes, perhaps, that others wouldn’t feel so alone in their own chaos. He was doing vulnerability before vulnerability became a brand.

Ozzy didn’t need to quote scripture. His life was a parable in motion. He didn’t need to condemn others…he confessed his own sins, publicly, often painfully. And that, perhaps, is why he unnerved the righteous: because he modeled grace without sermonizing.

He fed the sick with charity, gave to the poor, healed through music, carried his cross of addiction and ridicule, and still found time to laugh in the snow.

So when I cried the day he passed, it wasn’t just the loss of a rockstar. It was the loss of a companion. A teacher. A voice that had walked beside me in the darkest tunnels of my youth, whispering: “You’re not alone, mate. It’s messy, but you’ll make it.”

Rest easy, brother.

You were never just the Prince of Darkness to me…

You were a lighthouse disguised as thunder.

Off and on I have been reading Robert Stone since I was nineteen, beginning with the novel, Dog Soldiers, which was published in 1973. A film adaptation came out in 1978 called Who’ll Stop the Rain. Here is an instance of the book-is-not-always-better-than-the-movie; or, rather, in some ways the book is better, but in other ways the film is.

In any case, the plot concerns three young adults who embroil themselves in a predicament of extreme danger. John Converse is an American journalist who has been covering the Vietnam conflict. He is morally burned out and expresses his disillusionment by smuggling three kilos of heroin back to the States. He enlists the aid of his drug-addled wife, Marge, and a friend from his military days named Ray Hicks. The latter is, at the time, a merchant seaman who will do the actual smuggling. Upon arrival in California, they are in hot water; not with the law as such but with a corrupt federal agent and his murderous thugs.

Converse and his wife are pushovers insofar as the real bad guys are concerned, but Ray Hicks is a formidable force. In addition to his native street smarts, he is a former marine and a devotee of martial arts. His resistance to his pursuers has little or nothing to do with the monetary value of the product he carries, or with the personal pleasure he might derive from it. His refusal to make a deal or surrender outright is founded on sheer pride, not to mention a craving for danger:

‘If I walk away from this, he thought, I’ll be an old man—all ghosts and hangovers and mellow recollections… This is the one. This is the one to ride till it crashes.’

And it does crash, hard. But until then Ray lives out, with twisted nobility and stylish defiance, his brand of devotion to the samurai ideal. His memorable death-march along a vast stretch of railroad tracks transforms him into a kind of Christ figure: he is, in a sense, carrying the pains and sins of the world (in the form of heroin, wounds, and weapons of war). This sort of symbolism can easily lapse into cliché, but the author pulls it off convincingly.  

The minor characters who are included in the story are effective as well, at least for the most part. Antheil, the corrupt agent, is smooth and sharp and wicked. His two thugs, Danskin and Smitty, are comically horrific. Eddie Peace, a Hollywood hotshot who Ray approaches as a prospective buyer, might remind one of a hedonistic Roman emperor transplanted to the modern era. The guru named Dieter, on the other hand, struck me as somewhat weak, not a total failure as a character but unmemorable.     

Robert Stone, who died in 2015, wrote like a hipster variant of Graham Greene. The style is mordant and laconic, sometimes funny and frequently poetic. It’s clear that he was at home with the material he wrote about, in this novel and elsewhere.
