I’m very excited to say that I’ve been accepted, as part of the blogging team, for No Strings Attached. I just hope my writing measures up.

That said, as a warning to my readers, when I get excited about a topic (the cousin to that sentence is: any topic I write about excites me), I can, sometimes, get very long-winded and use a lot of commas.

So, to help me remember to be careful, about my writing style, I’m going to keep in mind that…

A man was recently found guilty of overusing commas.

The judge told him to expect a really long sentence.

I’m really looking forward to writing for all who read these blogs, to either provide information, and/or for your humorous enjoyment, as well as to hearing from you if you agree or disagree with what I write, and/or if you think of any topics you’d like me to cover, and/or if you think I should be imprisoned to a longer sentence than this one already is.

Peyote’s in the Heart of Downtown Las Vegas

Had a great Mexican dining experience this week at a newly opened restaurant in the old Downtowner Motel. A couple of restaurants have come and gone in the last couple of years, and we hope this is one to stay. Located just a couple blocks east of the downtown area, plenty of free parking to be had. 

This great place has both an indoor and a fantastic outdoor patio where most of the cooking takes place. Plenty of good seats and barbecue pits. The feel is total Baja Mexico.

The new Executive Chefs Daniel Arias and Isidro Marquez-Castillo, as well as the entire staff, would love to welcome you.

It may be a bit intimidating and stressful, regardless of whether you are getting ready for your very first date or you have recently ended a long-term relationship and haven’t dated anybody new in a while. But, there are many ways to make getting ready for a date simpler and more fun.

Getting Ready for a Date: How Do You Do It?

Although getting ready for a date often involves several stages, you should only take those that make you feel comfortable. Don’t feel obligated to apply makeup only for a date if you never do and don’t like the way it looks or feels. Just wear whatever makes you feel comfortable, the same goes for your wardrobe and hairstyle.

When preparing for a date, there is no need to fret or stress too much; after all, it should be a pleasant and romantic experience. Spending the entire time before worrying and sweating over getting ready will take the fun out of it, and probably spoil your chances of having a good time. Remain composed and self-assured.

You should not allow worry or concerns about your looks to derail your excitement for a date. This individual likes you enough to ask you out. As a result, be careful to maintain the characteristics that made him fall in love with you. These pointers will make sure that planning for your date is fun and easy.

1. Be yourself

Being yourself is one of the most crucial things to keep in mind as you get ready for a first date. Don’t strive to be someone you’re not; instead, choose the hair, cosmetics, and clothes that best reflect your personality. Wear something timeless and understated if you want to impress your date. Do not alter your style for anyone if you choose a more edgy appearance.

2. Give up worrying

The likelihood that your date will go anywhere will likely be destroyed if you worry over every single detail of your look. You probably aren’t paying as much attention to the discussion and getting to know your date as you could be if you spend the entire evening fussing with your hair or worrying about how you look.

3. Be confident

Nothing is more appealing than a person who is secure in themselves and content with the way they look. Keep in mind that your date is likely to have concerns of their own and is not ideal. Therefore, refrain from overanalyzing every detail and attempt to simply enjoy the date. Spend some time getting to know one another deeply.

4. Relax

Going on a date with anyone is pointless if you can’t unwind and enjoy yourself. Spend some time relaxing before your date, rather than fretting or stressing out about how you look or what you will say. Do whatever brings you peace and well-being; whether it’s reading, walking, or meditation.

5. Keep the conversation in mind

The conversation is what you should concentrate on most, both  during a date and when getting ready for one. Instead of focusing only on your looks, consider what you would like to discuss and learn about your potential new partner. The purpose of a date is to get to know someone and determine your compatibility with one another.

6. Take a shower

The importance of relaxing oneself before a date by taking a bath and ensuring that you feel comfortable and relaxed cannot be overstated; it’s crucial to feel good and tidy. Therefore, give your body the attention it deserves by having a lengthy bath or shower and then moisturize your entire body. The difference will be entirely in taking the time to unwind.

7. Cleaning Your Teeth

One of the most crucial things that everyone should do before departing for a night out is brushing their teeth. Make sure to floss as well to ensure that your teeth are completely clean, suggests a dentist in Scottsdale. Keep in mind that you will be with your partner the whole evening, so you want to make a strong first impression.

8. Discuss with your closest friends

Jacob’s Ladder

With a little help from his parents and friends, Jacob McFarland of Norristown, Pennsylvania, has overcome obstacles that should be an inspiration to us all. He’s 21 years old and has autism, which to many might mean that he is doomed to social and professional limitations. However, because of his upbeat and can-do spirit, Jacob has defied those odds!

In return for their love and belief in him, Jacob has always wanted to help his parents and friends and he’s now doing that as a coffee shop business owner (also a perfect venue to bring people together).

An added amazing bonus that has surfaced out of Jacob’s business, is that it has become a training ground for people with disabilities, where they can learn how to open and run a business or where they can practice interview skills and obtain jobs. Whichever route a disabled person feels suited to, each trainee can work on being productive, making a professional contribution to his or her own life, and enhancing social connections.

What started out as a seedling, but essential business, in the form of a coffee cart, outside of his parents’ non-essential business (a record store that had to close during the pandemic) has become a fully blooming (and booming) business, called the Coffee Closet.

If you’re ever in Norristown, Pennsylvania, stop in for a cup of java and jaw awhile with Jacob and his parents. This young man’s amazing transformation, essentially a kind of biblical tale, is inspiring -at any stage of life, disabled or not- to any who may feel entombed in immobility, to realize that almost anything is possible if we try one step up at a time, to keep putting one foot over the other, on the rungs of Jacob’s ladder, and refuse to look down.

The Gray Man–Movie Review

Movie Review – The Gray Man

How does Netflix do it? They’re not only releasing some of the most bingeable TV shows, but many of their feature films make you wonder how they did not make it to the big screen. This is a huge plus for Netflix subscribers, and the Russo Brothers latest action thriller The Gray Man is a perfect example. The film may not be perfect, but the thrills and laughs are a-plenty and rank right up there with the Lethal Weapon and Mission: Impossible franchises.

Ryan Gosling as Six proves to be every bit of an action star as Tom Cruise and Mel Gibson. He’s fierce, glib, and vulnerable as the man imprisoned for murder and later recruited by an elite section of the CIA to be an assassin. Fast forward eight years later, Six is in Bangkok working with agent Dani Miranda, played with gusto by Ana de Armas (No Time To Die, Knives Out), to assassinate a man selling national security secrets. The setting is a multi-level building with plenty of civilians which makes the kill shot not so stealth as planned.

Once Six catches up with his target, it’s revealed that all is not what it seems to Six. The man targeted works in the same program and he is labeled as Four. He hands off info to Six just before he dies telling him there is corruption within the program. Six questions his superior and ends up going rogue. Six’s superior labels him as a target and brings in a well known sociopath, mercenary Lloyd Hansen, that relishes the job and has anything at his disposal to get rid of Six. Chris Evans as Lloyd has a field day with the role. Yes, Captain America as a mustached lunatic.

From there, it’s one gigantic action set piece after another with Six outfoxing a frustrated Lloyd and the mercenary just bringing in more artillery and manpower that could wipe out a third world country. Is the plot a little over the top? Not a little, more like a lot. But, that does not keep the viewer from being on the edge of their seat with all the antics pulled off by the two major stars. Ana de Armas delivers an extra boost every time she is on screen. Billy Bob Thornton, Alfre Woodard, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick and the rest of the cast fit the bill of this beautifully fast-paced espionage thriller.

The Russo Brothers have taken a property that’s been lingering around for years and turned it into a no-holds-barred action extravaganza that can easily become a new franchise. This is such a typical Hollywood story: a series of novels (written by Mark Greaney) which originally, back in 2011, was supposed to be directed by James Gray (Ad Astra) and starring Brad Pitt and Charlize Theron in the mercenary role.

This would have been a very different film and I could easily see Pitt in the Gosling role, but cannot see Theron being as much fun as Evans. So, ten years later (and $200 million dollars spent) we get everything on the small screen when it belonged as a summer blockbuster. As it stands, the film had a very limited release. That’s the way the industry is rolling now, streaming bigger and better product. It doesn’t always come out that way, but every now and then we get some really enjoyable movies that make us stream rather than go to our local multiplex. The Russo Brothers’ The Gray Man is a perfect example and is already slated for a sequel.

Movie Review – Nope

Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Productions opens our eyes to the very best of writer/director/producer Jordan Peele (Get Out, Us) with his creepy and innovative new entry, NOPE. I’m placing that title purposely in caps because it is both acronym and multiple meanings and for the sake of your viewing pleasure I will not reveal that secret (if you have not heard it already). Part Twilight Zone, part Outer Limits, Peele’s new movie is both funny, mysterious sci-fi, full of unexpected scares and at the same time very grounded. The characters are as engaging as the story itself and dare I say that Peele’s strange tale is mind boggling.

There are plenty of bizarre happenings in NOPE, beginning with a 1998 sitcom set that has taken a very serious and frightening turn. The star of the family friendly show, a chimpanzee named Gordy, has wreaked havoc on the stage and maimed cast and crew after being startled. What this has to do with UFOs is as big of a mystery as what takes place in the present day at Otis Haywood’s ranch where he and his family train and handle horses for film and TV. One day while Otis, Sr. is training, Otis “OJ” Haywood Jr. witnesses an unusual event…a shower of small metal objects comes falling out of the sky. A nickel pierces his father’s skull, killing him.

OJ and his very mouthy sister, Em, are left to manage the ranch, but Em decides to seek the glitter of Hollywood and leave her brother handling something he is very unprepared for. Six months later, OJ is fired off a commercial set due to a misbehaving horse. Em tries to fix things, but only makes it worse. She finds out that OJ has slowly been selling the horses to a nearby small western theme park, Jupiter’s Claim, to make ends meet. This angers Em because she takes pride in the legacy of their generation, being the great, great grand descendants of the black jockey in the very first moving picture.

The man running Jupiter’s Claim is none other than Jupe, once the child star of Gordy’s Home and one of the few unscathed survivors. Jupe, a bargain basement P.T. Barnum, has something special in store for his patrons with Haywood’s horses. There lies just one of the many mysteries.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch (pun intended), weird occurrences are taking place. Animals are becoming unsettled and mysteriously whisked away, electricity is fluctuating, unearthly sounds are emanating from the clouded sky. One particular night, OJ witnesses an unidentifiable flying object. He can’t believe something so big could move so fast. In fact, the sighting is so brief OJ is not sure what to make of it until his sister witnesses some of the bizarre goings on. She insists that this is their chance to become rich and famous.

What ensues is a perfect blend of dark comedy, tense dramatic moments, and eerie scares. Writer/director/producer Jordan Peele is at the top of his game as he has us laugh, deliver the chills, and root for the characters that are so appealing and real for us. His is truly a tale of the unexpected with some jaw dropping moments. NOPE presents a whole new angle on visitors from another world. It’s neither Alien, Independence Day, or Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Peele’s story is as different and as exciting as his visuals which makes his movie an unsettling classic.

Alexis Park with Ten Shows

Alexis Park Resort and Casino theaters, have now upgraded significantly and has two showrooms making room for ten shows. 

I hadn’t been there in ages but was treated two nights ago to a fantastic media party. All the shows did approximately 10-minute schedules. The new room is called Modern Showroom and you enter from in front and to the right of the hotel front door—lovely room. They treated everyone to a fantastic spread of appetizers, cheeses and breads. I think they will easily have room to add another couple of shows. 

Some of the featured ones included All Motown with four lovely girls, All Shook Up, of course an Elvis Show, The Carpenters, a fantastic show with dead ringers of the singers, Stoker, Late Night Magic, Wonderland, Big Little Variety, and Burlesque. Different shows, different nights—try to see a couple of them. And starting in November, a new show, Frankly Frank starring Gary Anthony as Frank Sinatra. 

1. Free parking—tremendous asset now in Las Vegas.

2. Easy, flat floor access for disabled guests.

3. Amazing wide and comfortable chairs, which I need having just undergone spinal surgery.

4. There isn’t a bad seat in the house.

5. A large stage proportionate to the theater size.

6. Nice decor.

7. Wide aisles and a nice exit leading right to the restrooms.

8. Easy access to the bar.

9. Air conditioning that is the right temperature, not too cold like many others.

10. Lots of leg room.

11. Affordable, professional, and entertaining shows; something that is difficult to find these days, and many more tweaks that makes this place a pleasure to visit as opposed to a hassle.
