When you are a child, making friends isn’t too difficult. All it takes is playing in the park, speaking to someone at school, or just being in the same place as another child for more than a few minutes and you have the basis of a good friendship. When you get older however, it’s much harder to make friends. You may find that there aren’t many opportunities to meet people, or if you do, you don’t know how to strike up a conversation.
With this in mind, it’s no surprise that there is a loneliness epidemic whereby more adults than ever are admitting to not having a close circle or even a few friends. In this article, we take a look at a few ways to make friends as an adult that can hopefully help you build your circle.
Join activities to find those with similar interests
When it comes to making friends as an adult, one of the best things you can do is to join activities and find people with similar interests. It might be you’ve always had an avid interest in hunting but have always done it solo. So why not join an event like a dove hunt where you can meet other like-minded individuals? Or perhaps you can join an art club, a cookery club, or perhaps a class at your local gym? The point is finding something you love to do as you will already have a common interest with others who are there.
Use tech to find new people
Technology can be a fantastic tool when it comes to making friends as an adult. There are now so many apps and online communities dedicated to bringing like-minded people together, whether that’s through hobbies, networking, fitness, travel, or local events. Social media groups in your local area can also help you discover meetups and activities you may never have known existed otherwise. Even something as simple as joining conversations online can help build confidence and lead to real-life friendships. The key is to use technology as a stepping stone to genuine connection rather than replacing face-to-face interaction altogether.
Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there in everyday scenarios
Sometimes opportunities to make friends can happen in the most ordinary situations. You might be relaxing on a beach on holiday and striking up conversation with someone, grabbing a coffee in town, or talking with another parent at the school gate. While it can feel uncomfortable at first, being open, approachable and willing to chat with others can make a real difference and help you find new friends.
These are just a few ways you can make friends as an adult. While it can feel intimidating, putting yourself out there and joining activities with others who share the same interests as you can really help you meet new people.
