Tony’s has been serving family-style Italian food since 1959. I like family-style service not because I was brought up eating this way, but because it gives everyone a chance to taste everything. tonys-6

Time’s Square is not the best place in NYC to get good food, it’s a little “touristy”, loud and crowded but we wanted Italian food for our post-theatre dinner. Tony’s is a spacious restaurant with “Italian décor” but not overdone, and yes, it is a little “touristy” but that does not negate that fact that the portions were large, and the food was good or that it lacked authenticity. tonys-5

We had the house salad and the shrimp scampi appetizer. The garlic butter sauce was amazing and thanks to the fresh basket of bread, we sopped up the sauce until there was none left. tonys7

For entrees, one of my faves, Linguini and White Clam Sauce, which I am always a little hesitant to order because typically it can be a little gritty if the clams aren’t rinsed properly, but this dish was sans the grit and delicious; the Veal Parm, Chicken Piccatta, Spaghetti & Meatballs and sides of Escarole & Beans and Peppers & Zucchini. tonys-3

All the dishes were fresh and flavorful. And even though most of the group said no to dessert because they were stuffed to the max and could not possibly eat one more thing, there’s always one who has to end with something sweet and she ordered the Affogatto. One taste led to three more orders. Affogato means “drowned” in Italian…vanilla ice cream and coffee liqueur drowned in espresso, topped with a chocolate cannoli crumble and served in a Martini glass. In a word, sinful!  If made right, Affogatto is one of the best Italian desserts and Tony’s was incredible! tonys1

This is a busy place, but our server was great, he didn’t rush us, so it was more of a dining experience. Tony’s Di Napoli is a fun relaxing place with a large variety of good Italian comfort food at reasonable prices; we will definitely go back for a pre or post-theatre dinner.

If you don’t want to wait in line forever, be sure to make a reservation!
