Begin Each Day with a Grateful Heart

As we approach Thanksgiving, I often think about how much we take this holiday for granted. Immediately after Halloween is over, commercials jump right over to Christmas. It’s as if Thanksgiving is just something that gets in the way.

As many of you know, part of my morning routine is breaking out my guitar and playing uplifting songs, mostly those which involve praise and worship. One of the tunes I played this morning was a simple song written by Don Moen, it is entitled “Give thanks.”

The song begins with “Give thanks with a grateful heart.” As I began singing, I started reflecting about what having a grateful heart really means.

Unfortunately, most people fall into the trap of focusing on the negative. Life is filled with challenges and there are obstacles along the way. There are some things we do not have control over; however, we certainly can choose how we respond to the challenges. No matter what, we can always be grateful.

How you begin your day sets the tone for what kind of day you are going to have. I encourage you to get a good night’s sleep, wake up early, and change your morning routine. So many people hit the snooze button when the alarm clock goes off, and when they finally get up, they are already stressed out thinking about what they have to do throughout the day.

Since I have changed my morning routine, I have found that I have more energy and I’m even more focused. Starting your day out positive, with a grateful heart, truly makes a difference.

My day begins with morning exercises and a 35-minute walk. During this walk, I listen to positive messages along with uplifting music. After that, I jump in the shower and eat a healthy breakfast, followed by playing guitar for about 35 minutes.

A lot of this time, I get into a reflective mode and make sure that it is positive reflection. I focus on all the blessings I have in my life and give thanks to God for all that he has provided. I have an attitude of gratitude.

How do you begin your day? Are you starting off by giving thanks with a grateful heart? How about before you leave your home and drive out to work?

Here is a good assignment for you this week: Whatever shoes you are going to wear for the next day, put them underneath your bed. In the morning, once you start looking for the shoes, you’ll remember that you put them under there. As you bend down to reach for your shoes, you are already on your knees. While you are there, begin to give thanks with a grateful heart. Instead of focusing on any problems or negative things, immediately shift your focus to a minimum of five things you are truly thankful for, and then begin giving thanks with a grateful heart.

Imagine if you do this daily? I guarantee that your whole attitude will completely shift, because you are beginning to start your day off with a positive morning routine.

If you woke up this morning, that’s one great reason to give thanks. Always have an attitude of gratitude. Begin your day positively, and make a commitment to always give thanks with a grateful heart.

Have a super day filled with Thanksgiving!
