I don’t think I know anyone who can pronounce the name of this restaurant correctly. I’ve heard it called Cornish “Pasty” or Cornish “Paste-y”; phonetically it’s “pass-ty”. But whatever you call it, this place is like no other. So, what is a pasty exactly? Borrowing from my Italian heritage, it looks like a mini calzone, but it is actually a baked, hand-made folded pastry sealed around the edges with a flaky buttery crust similar to the texture of a pie crust, stuffed full of deliciousness with meats, vegetables or fruits. It’s been part of the British diet since the 13th Century. Cornwall, England native Dean Thomas founded the Cornish Pasty Company in January 2005.
Located downtown in the heart of the Las Vegas Arts District, Cornish Pasty has an artsy vibe with an industrial pub feel. Our server told us the space was a renovated church and that’s what it looks like with the high ceilings and bench (pew) seating. It’s a very large venue with shared tables, an open kitchen, a huge bar that seats 50 and serves a variety of local beers, international draughts and craft cocktails.
There are a dog-friendly patio and a gaming area with darts, shuffleboard and pool tables. When you walk through the doors, the first thing you notice is the mouth-watering smell of the pasties baking. The menu features over 40 hearty made-to-order signatures, premium, vegetarian and vegan pasties; soups, sides, and salads. My friends and I made a unanimous decision that we were going to keep coming back until we have tried every pasty on the menu, and then start all over again, but as the old saying goes, “Life is uncertain, eat dessert first” so since it was our first time, we started with the to-die-for Apple Caramel Pasty, the Sticky Toffee Pudding with creme anglaise and the Chocolate Bread & Butter Pudding all rich, decadent and filled with ooey, gooey goodness. We have since been back several times and made our way through half the pasty menu and the salads. If you are looking for something new to try, do yourself a favor and head downtown to the Cornish Pasty Company. These pasties can be shipped, shared or taken home half-baked so you can finish them off when you are ready to indulge.
Perfect for group reservations and social occasions.
